Creating New Value from Akasaka Geisha's Digital Archive

Akasaka is a neighborhood that holds within it both a culture nurtured over a long history and a reputation as a sophisticated social gathering place. Akasaka Ikuko, who represents the hanamachi geisha district of this neighborhood and is known as its oldest active geisha, is nothing less than a living embodiment of Akasaka’s culture. In 2016, she became the first geisha ever to receive the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Rays (in recognition of contributions to arts and culture), and her achievements have been widely celebrated. This project archives the culture and way of life that Akasaka Ikuko has spent many years preserving and sharing with the world. By weaving in contemporary perspectives and technology, it seeks to connect that legacy to new forms of value. It is a project that inherits the essence of styles and cultures that defined their era, while creating new expressions that may endure as “future vintage.”
